Saturday afternoon Oct 22 three Humpback whales treated the village to a display of "bubbling" right at the entrance to Trout Bay, around which the village is situated. We stood on the pier and watched as the whales swam back and forth, dove, blew their bubbles to concentrate the Krill, and then rose up through the herded feed with their mouths open. One can predict where the whales will break through the surface by the seagulls that concentrate over the rising bubbles.

This display continued all afternoon and ended only when individual witnesses tired of standing through the rain showers.

Three Klemtu Mornings

late November weather has been very dramatic - changing every ten minutes - snow, rain, sun, hail, rainbows, high winds. Flying in and out has been very sketchy.

This shot was actually taken this evening during what I have learnt what are called "Clam Tides" because they come in so very high - and then, of course they go out very low for finding clams.

Sandy & I have gone for our evening walk to the new BC Ferry terminal 2 kms north of Klemtu

and we see three whales dramatically surfacing near a couple of boats. They dive down showing their tails, and then they dramatically break through the surface, in an obvious planned coordination of timing. They are diving to 'ball up' schools of young herring and then rising through the school with their mouths open.

one whale even suddenly leaped completely out of the water!

the quality of my images is not as good as I would have liked as it was just a dusk in flat light and we were on shore, a bit too far away - and the whales were very fast! I shot with my Canon 7D, 70-200mm F4 IS with canon 1.4x multiplier, and fast motor drive. ISO started at 1000 and later moved up to 1600. Fstop started at F8 and finished at F5.6

On a fishing trip a small fish was thrown out and an eagle promptly attempted to pick it up - he missed the first couple of trys - it was pretty big for him and it was mostly underwater - shot with -my Canon 7D, on fast motor drive with the 70-200 mm F4 IS.

woke up at 5:00 AM and decided to go for a walk and then head into the office

As usual it was a peaceful, quiet morning along the beach at Klemtu - calm high tide.

I made my way over to look at the nice schooner tied to the float, and met a happy couple from Tacoma,Washington, Jerry & Fran on a three month sail to Alaska. Fran is on a leave of absence from her job as a swimming instructor

Their vessel was very attractive. Jerry explained it is one of only 159 left from 163 that had been build by Aitkens Boat Builders of California in the 50's - this one from 1956 is one of the few made as a Schooner. It is unusually wide and does have a bit of a "roll" - which is the reason they bought it for only $50,000 four years ago - the owners didn't like to "roll" - this boat is 13 ft wide and 43 ft long. Yes, they live onboard year round.

Fran also brought out her five year old "parrot" named Taco. She wan't so sure about my big lens, and the clicking

Bus she calmed down a little, and even came on to my arm, briefly...

Taco is a bit excited by all of the other birds here - Fran is asking her to do her eagle imitation. she didn't quite get it into full show - it was pretty early - apparently she even makes the eagle call!

OK, what's that "big eye you've got there?"

Yes, a beautiful boat, lived on by a beautiful couple, visiting in beautiful Klemtu, and on the way to Alaska

And a beautiful Taco - all in all a very nice walk before work - I also passed one of the nurses out jogging. She missed all of this ..........

Herring Egg harvest April 2011 Klemtu

herring Egg harvest is a very important food source for Klemtu residents. It has been a staple for thousands of years through the history of this Kitasoo nation. The process of collection of eggs is hard labour mixed with expert understanding of the Herring and its place in the natural cycle. The herring spawn is only a few days in duration and it occurs at different times in each location dependent upon temperature and weather conditions. It is very much a communal effort and the process continues to help the community bond in common purpose. Here is Charlie Mason Sr. with his herring boat. Charlie works tirelessly on behalf of his community in the harvesting of these eggs; indeed, in all harvests. He gives freely of his time and expertise.

Gary takes some of the eggs that have been deposited on a slender seaweed. PEople create "strings" of ropes with hemlock, various types of seaweed for the herring to deposit their eggs on. Like nets these Strings are then pulled from the water with the eggs attached. The variety of styles is important. Seaweed eggs are most often eaten with the seaweed for flavour, the hmelock branches are more frequently stripped of their eggs for drying, smoking, canning, freezing as methods of preserving for use during the year.

Nice string Gary. This year the harvest was very good - with large plump eggs and thickly deposited.

many tons are brought in and distributed over just a few short days. But a couple of weeks of watching out in a camp were required to get all of the sets ready, and wait, and hope that once again the strings have been set in the particular spot that the herring will choose to spawn - and hope that no seals or whales appear to send the herrings down to the depths.

for me a dream photo opportunity - to photograph a full moon setting into a sunrise against mountains almost came true here

and I didn't get buck fever - actually made a nice array of images to tell the story. I had hoped for a little more colour, red. Photo taken with my new Canon 7D, and a 17-40 F4 Canon lens on a tripod, a bit of 580EX fill flash on the foreground Joshua Tree. Sandy and I went to Palm Springs on her Spring Break from teaching grade one. I came down from my hideaway in Klemtu.

Calder Cheverie has just spent three days paddling from Bella Bella to Klemtu

this is the type of water (the best of it!) that Calder was heading into on his trip up to Prince Rupert. Believe me at the end of April it is still pretty cold on the water, especially in a Kayak. but at least the Herring are returning and therefore all other life.

Calder is heading into a couple of weeks of paddling into one of the significant rain forests of the world, over 5 metres of annual rainfall - 16 feet plus!

in the afternoon a bit of sunshine. Tim put out some halibut trim. first came the Ravens, then the Eagles. These and more photos were taken in about 20 minutes. Then I went to the store for groceries.

Weekend at Klemtu, basketball

Basketball is the main sport in Klemtu. there are teams for each age grouping and gender. Everyone that is able plays; everyone participates. The community sends teams to tournaments; and the community hosts tournaments. The next one will be in April.

As you see everyone plays with gusto - the skill level and the pace are fairly high.

Gary got in a pretty good jump to get over the heads and hands and he did score on this shot!

Everyone comes out to spectate - here are a couple of our fine young teachers watching some of their students take on a team of graduates.

on an 8 hour road trip Friday to see Route 66 nad Mojave Desert - wow lots of desolate space in California, we visited

Keslo Post, now a tourist centre for the Mojave Desert National Reserve

But built in 1925 and operated until 1985 as a train station and a barracks for work crews - the area was first a centre for ranches, later iron ore mines, heading to Chicago

about a 100 years ago these southern Calcifornia deserts received enough rain to support large ranches, now they are too dry, but still some cattle are ranged in the lowland deserts such as the Mojave, not like before however.

JOSHUA TREE NATIONAL PARK

Sandy & I are just starting our week at Joshua Tree National Park at a very nice Cabin, Indian Cove Ranch. The park is literally across the driveway. Very cold and strong winds blew off part of the roof of our hosts house. Rained about an inch over night so there should be lovely flowers when it warms up STARTING TOMORROW! Oh well we need a rest.
But we (I) lucked out and this morning looked out to a clear sky and the Super Moon about to set behind the red ridges of the Park. Nice morning sun light to permit the rare balancing of light of the moon to the ambient light - this shot is one of MY Bucket List shots! What a thrill to have this opportunity to shoot such an image. So I just put clothes on over my PJ's for layering warmth ( and I did need it) and walked out across the park looking for a good foreground. finding one I shot a range of images including this one (with no foreground except the nice ladder of ridges and clouds rising up to the moon. I will post more shots form this series after I have edited them.
Also got some nice desert Flora shots on the way back.

a nice pleasant, calm snowfall today in Klemtu. I had to make some images. first over the water.

then a couple of huge starfish glowed up from below ....

a nice corner of the village with a beach that should be nice in the summer ...

an old weathered shed, settled into the snow fall. Ravens, lots of them flying about overhead with their unique, heavy 'whoosh / whoosh' sound as they cut throught the falling snow ....

and a couple of the village dogs. these dogs are the happiest as a group I've ever been around. they all have big smiles as they come up to greet every person. they will just pick up and go for a walk with you. Like the people; they just seem to be laughing and loving.

Marnie Chonga of Quadra Island is a registered Shiatsu Chair Massage therapist. She is also an adventurer and a Yoga leader. So when she visited us at Klemtu she offered a Yoga session. I and four of the school teachers participated. I was the least graceful. Marnie was the most gracious as she let me make these images using the timer and a chair. Marnie is standing on the right in this image.

At the Klemtu Health Centre Marnie has the use of a gorgious healing room that is built out of wood and natural light, and in the shape of a Teepee. There is a powerful and positive energy to the room. And to Marnie's gifted hands. You can see Marnie loves to offer her healing skills.

This is a very high ceiling. I didn't do the room justice in my attempts to convey its presence.

On a sunny Sunday I took my new Canon 7d and hiked up a VERY steep and ROUGH mountain in the search of these very nice vistas. It was foolish as I went alone and I could have easily injured myself. I didn't but I have paid the price of over doing it! Lots more views like these around here!

Jan 17th my second flight in to Klemtu offered up the kind of weather that makes the reputation of the Central coast of BC as one of the most beautiful places in the world. As I am flying in to start my new job with the Kitasoo Band Council as controller for the village of Klemtu, I take this as a GOOD OMEN!

Jan 6th I flew into Klemtu on a DeHavelan Beaver floatplane, with Rebecca our pilot and three other residents of Klemtu. I filmed this video with my Canon T1i and a Canon 10-22 lens. Notice how smooth this landing is. Sure the water is calm, but touch down was not even felt - watch for the water spray begin to rise.

Sorry about the quality, size of this video - I shot it at 1020 but after processing into a web sized video by AcdSee it became very small. File was reduced from 180 mgbyts to 1.8!

On Thursday Jan 6th I flew into Klemtu to finalize my employment as Controller of the Kitasoo / Xaixais Nation located at Klemtu, BC on the Central Coast. It is at the doorstep of the Great Bear Rain Forest - the home of the white Spirit Bear. On Jan 17th I will fly back in to begin my service to this community. Sandy, my wife will stay in South Surrey. She will retire July 1 and then will be able to come up to enjoy the summer in one of the most beautiful places in the world!

the whole village of Klemtu with its wonderful natural harbour and large lake to the west. A delightful little creek flows from the lake to the sea splitting the village into north and south areas. My work will be in the Band Office located in the south side.

Larry has a great finish!

Every Jan 1 Peninsula Runners Store of White Rock BC hosts a "Resolution Run" for hardy enthusiasts. It is part of a four run Trail Run Series with prizes and timed finishes. 2011 with out rain or deep snow saw 280 participants. I have run this in earlier years, and photographed with my G7 while running, but now I only make images of the fun. The dedicated staff at Peninusla Runners make this event happen and we all form lasting wonderful memories of getting going with a hearty smile Jan1 each year! Yeah!!

Sorry about the quality of these images - the result of high ISOs, low shutter speeds, wide open lens, and fast horses - also I had to shoot through the bars of the arena. Nonetheless I wanted to attempt to share the extraordinary beauty generated by the interaction of Johnathon Swift with his horses.
In particular this "ballet" of rider, horse and very long pole that was always in contact with the ground was a surprisingly emotive spectacle to be privaledged to observe.

I have copied this usig my 100mm Canon Macro lens from a print of my first (and only) self assignment for Photojournalism taken in Sept 1971 when I was at UBC. Took the bus from UBC with several hundred other protestors to begin the attempt to stop the scheduled atomic bomb test at Amchitka Island Alsaska. I got this shot of Rober Hunter adressing the crowd. He and others went on the first Greenpeace voyage to attempt to get to the test zone. Though they did not make it there, the resulting publicity is credited with stopping future tests at Amchitka, and as such is seen as the beginning of the end of the Cold War. History shows us that Peaceful Protest does work! blessings
